Strategies List

To regularly obtain student attention, teachers need to use the strategies listed above. In addition, teachers need to develop a wide range of in-the-moment moves to capture or recapture that attention. Teachers should learn a few attention-getting strategies from each of the larger categories below: desisting, alerting, enlisting, and winning. Note that this is an objective list of a wide range of moves, without judging the appropriateness of any. Think of this list as a set of tools – sometimes one is more appropriate to use – and skillful teachers know how to make this match.
